Goods in transit insurance
Goods in transit insurance

We all know that any form of insurance is a waste of money - until we come to need it that is, and then we thank our lucky stars that we had the forsight to take out that policy in the nick of time.

And so it is with goods in transit insurance policies which are generally available for a person, persons or business which transports goods from one place to another. Normally these businesses are paid for their services and this could result in a claim against them should there be a loss or accident which caused damage to the goods being carried.

Goods in transit insurance is designed to cover against fire, theft, attempted theft, and loss or damage by accidental means to goods on or in the insured vehicle. Cover applies whilst the goods are in transit or whilst they are been loaded or unloaded from the vehicle.

Think of your financial loss should you have a motorway accident for instance. Perishable goods could deteriorate even if they were not directly damaged because of the number of hours you would necessarily have to spend at the scene. In other cases the goods in transit could be damaged by the accident, and if you don't have the requisite insurance then who pays for the damage? We suspect that you do!

The above can apply to businesses which carry goods on behalf of others, from your local shopkeeper bringing in produce from the market once a week to large businesses who carry a diverse range of goods to be delivered piecemeal, and an example of the latter could be a courier business which may have a multitude of different packages to be delivered to different addresses.

Anyone else who carries goods in their own vehicle for their own business or carries goods for other people or businesses should consider arranging a goods in transit insurance policy as their van insurance or car insurance policy doesn’t provide any cover for the goods.
